John Foreman

I got into IT the way a lot of people do: I was the person friends and family called when something broke. Plus, I had a natural curiosity that thrived in the computer world. My mother loved to tell the story of how I learned how to turn on a computer at just 2 years old without instruction. Talk about turning it off and on again, huh!

That spark turned into a Computer Science degree, then five years on a tech bench, then progressively more independent IT work. Most recently, I was the sole on-site and remote support technician for up to nine K-12 charter schools a week.

What I like about this work is the range. In the same week I might be re-architecting Wi-Fi coverage, walking a client through a projector issue, and writing PowerShell to clean up stale Active Directory accounts. I am never bored and there is always something to learn.

To add to that, I care about getting the small stuff right: clear ticket notes, clear documentation, users who don't have to ask twice. I do this with a helping mindset and a deep adoration for learning new technologies.

Outside of work I'm a family man first. I spend time with my wife and playing fetch with our little Maltipoo, Link. If not with them, I'm usually building something with whatever time is left over: a home server, a PC, occasionally a case for my Security+ study group of one. If you want the technical version of that, check out the project log. Of course, I also love to game. League of Legends is a current pleasure of mine, achieving higher ranks. Who knows, maybe I will see you on the rift!

Games I actually play

The long-running ones, plus whatever has pulled me in lately.

  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Skyrim
  • League of Legends
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Elder Scrolls lore is a genuine rabbit hole for me. There's a lot of overlap between reading dense in-game history for fun and reading dense vendor documentation for work, and I'd argue the first one is better practice than it sounds.
